You’re driving with Apple Maps open and want to check your speed without unlocking your phone or bouncing between apps. That is the problem eyeSpeed V3 solves.
Version 3.0 is my biggest update yet. It adds Live Activities to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, plus deep iOS Shortcuts support for hands-free control. The goal was simple: bring modern iOS convenience to a privacy-first speedometer without compromising eyeSpeed’s “Data Not Collected” architecture.
Why I Built V3
I originally built eyeSpeed because I wanted a clean GPS speedometer that did not track me. V3 came from an even more specific need: seeing my speed while using navigation.
With Live Activities in the Dynamic Island, I can keep Maps on screen and still glance at my speed. That sounds small until you use it. It makes speed monitoring more convenient, and it cuts down on unnecessary phone interaction while driving.
What’s New in V3
Lock Screen Speed Display
The headline feature is Live Activities. Your current speed stays visible on the Lock Screen in large, readable type, even when eyeSpeed is not in the foreground. That means you can switch to navigation or music and still keep speed in view.
That convenience also matters for safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has repeatedly warned about visual-manual distraction. Fewer taps and fewer unlocks are a good thing.
Dynamic Island Support
On iPhone 14 Pro and later, eyeSpeed also displays speed in the Dynamic Island. It is compact, glanceable, and especially useful when Maps is already doing the heavy lifting on your main screen.
Smarter Battery Management
Live Activities are only useful if they are practical in daily driving, so V3 includes configurable timeout controls. You can keep the feature available when you need it and let it shut down automatically when you do not.
Shortcuts and Siri
V3 also adds broad iOS Shortcuts support. You can start or stop Live Activities with Siri, switch between MPH and KPH, lock units, change display preferences, or build automations around your routine. Commands execute locally on your device, so the convenience does not come with extra data collection.
Privacy-First Live Activities
This is where eyeSpeed still draws a hard line. Most speedometer apps need location access for GPS speed, but many also use that data for analytics, ads, or third-party sharing.
eyeSpeed works differently. It is one of very few speedometer apps with a “Data Not Collected” App Store label. Speed calculations happen on-device. Your location does not leave your phone. Live Activities do not change that.
That is not a marketing layer added after the fact. It is the architecture.
What V3 Means
V3 is my answer to a question a lot of apps get wrong: can you build a modern, feature-rich utility without turning users into data sources?
Yes. Live Activities, Dynamic Island support, Shortcuts, stability improvements, and better background behavior all land in V3 without changing the privacy promise. That is the future I want for eyeSpeed: useful, native to iOS, and still focused on the driver instead of the data.
