34 Themes, From Classic Chrome to Custom
V4 ships with 34 built-in themes organized by automotive era. There are three eyeSpeed originals, eleven curated cross-era looks, and deeper sets organized by decade: 1950s Chrome & Fins, 1960s Muscle & Racing, 1970s Earth Tones, 1980s Neon & Digital, 1990s JDM & Clean, 2000s Carbon & LED. There is also a Nature set for drivers who want something quieter.
A few specific ones worth calling out: Amber Optitron and Electroluminescent are both from the JDM era and should feel familiar to anyone who has spent time in a late-90s or early-2000s import. Testarossa Vice and DeLorean Flux lean hard into the 80s digital aesthetic. Grand Tour Classic and Deco Royale pull from earlier decades where the instrument cluster was more art than data.
None of these are locked behind an in-app purchase. They come with the app.
Day and Night Slots
V4 lets you assign a different theme to light and dark appearance. The app switches automatically based on your iOS setting or the time of day.
This is more useful than it sounds in practice. Driving in full sun through a light-cabin car is a different visual environment from a late run on a dark mountain road. A high-contrast theme you dialed in for night driving might wash out at noon. The day/night slots let you configure both once and stop thinking about it.
Build Your Own
If none of the 34 built-in themes are quite right, the custom theme editor lets you pick your own background, foreground, and accent colors, then choose from 17 font families. You can name and save the result. Full undo/redo is there if you change your mind mid-way through.
This is the kind of thing that sounds like a small addition but matters if you care about the tool fitting the environment you drive in. A dark olive background with a warm amber display and a clean geometric font can make the app feel at home on a rally-style interior in a way that no preset quite captures.
Why Themes Actually Matter in a Car
Readability is not just about font size. It is about contrast, ambient lighting, and whether your eye can find the number without effort. A theme that works in a bright afternoon may not work well at dusk. Cabin lighting, tinted windows, and dashboard reflections all affect what reads cleanly at a glance.
For import owners specifically (JDM, Euro, or classic), there is also a straightforward aesthetic case. If you have put real effort into the inside of your car, a generic white-on-black display starts to feel like a mismatched part. Themes let eyeSpeed fit the dash instead of fight it.
The goal is not decoration. The goal is a display that you want to look at and can read quickly when you need to.
What Did Not Change
The privacy model is the same. Speed calculation happens on-device. Your location never leaves your phone. eyeSpeed still carries the “Data Not Collected” App Store label, one of very few speedometer apps that does. No account is required to use themes. Nothing about personalization changes how the app handles your location data.
The pricing model is the same. One-time purchase, no subscription, no ads. Themes are included in eyeSpeed. There is no second purchase to unlock them.
Everything Else Still Works
Live Activities still push your speed to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. In V4, the Live Activity display uses the font from your chosen theme, so the visual consistency carries beyond the app itself.
MPH/KPH switching is still instant and still lockable. iOS Shortcuts integration is still available for hands-free control. If you have built automations around eyeSpeed, they keep working.
Driving It Home
The point of V4 is not decoration. It is a display you can read at a glance in your actual lighting, in a cabin you have already chosen with care.
